The City Health Office successfully launched the school-based immunization program, ‘Bakuna Eskwela,’ on October 7, 2024, at Margarita Memorial Central Elementary School, Brgy. Luna.

The program, led by the Department of Health (DOH), aims to immunize millions of children nationwide, including school-aged children in Surigao City, against preventable diseases.

‘Bakuna Eskwela’ focuses on protecting public school students from measles, rubella, tetanus, diphtheria, and cervical cancer. It is a joint effort between the DOH and the Department of Education (DepEd), targeting students in Grades 1, 4, and 7. The initiative aims to reach at least 3.8 million children across the country.

In Surigao City, the City Health Office and medical professionals will continue to visit schools throughout October to administer vaccines to eligible students. This aligns with the DOH’s objective to curb the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases and prevent potential outbreaks in schools.

The program is supported by the Philippine Pediatric Society Northeastern Mindanao Chapter, led by President Dr. Agnes Andanar, and City Health Officer Dr. Benjielita Notada.

Parents and guardians are urged to cooperate with school authorities and ensure their children participate in this crucial immunization drive to help protect the health of the entire community.
