Red Orchid Award aims for a 100% smoke-free Davao Region

Davao City –  At the Department of Health-XI regional office, the Regional Tobacco Control and Prevention Program Manager, Rosemarie Basañes, presented to the media their planned strategies and steps to strengthen their campaign against smoking.

As part of their strategy in attaining a hundred percent smoke free region, the DOH gives out the Red Orchid Award to local government offices and public hospitals.

The award seeks to spread awareness of keeping each government agency smoke-free which is also in-line with the Executive Order No. 26 or the Nationwide Smoking Ban Order which directly addresses the problem of smoking in the country.

Since 2009, the Red Orchid Award still continues its annual validation process for the next set of awardees in which one of the requirements for validation is having a trained counselor for each respective government office and public hospital within the region.

Presently, there have been a total of eight local government units that have garnered the ‘HALL OF FAMER’ status for winning the Red Orchid in three consecutive years and also Compostela Valley local government unit is being marked as a recipient for the next award.

DOH-XI wishes to make the region, 100 percent smoke-free by motivating each local government unit, office and public hospital to actively participate in the campaign against the harmful vice that is smoking. (PIA)
