In a heartfelt celebration of White Cane Safety Day 2024, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), through the Regional Focal Person for Persons with Disabilities and Senior Citizens (PWD-SC) Affairs, organized a series of inclusive events. The celebration was in collaboration with the Provincial Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO) of Zamboanga Del Sur, led by Ms. Miriam Acosta-Llanos, and brought together blind, visually impaired, and orthopedically impaired individuals for a day filled with educational and environmental activities held at the MMFN, Baclay, Tukuran, Zamboanga Del Sur on August 1, 2024.

The event began with an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign aimed at raising awareness about the importance of protecting and conserving the remaining natural resources and in maintaining a clean and livable environment for PWDs. Following the campaign, participants embarked on a nature trek and tree growing activity, fostering a connection with nature and highlighting the role of PWDs in environmental conservation. A total of 90 endemic forest tree seedlings were planted by blind and visually impaired participants.

A significant highlight of the day was the tour of the Modernized Mechanized Forest Nursery, where blind and visually impaired participants had the opportunity to engage with the environment in a tactile and sensory manner. The tour continued with a visit to the Regional Wildlife Rescue Center facility, providing participants with a unique opportunity to interact with wildlife. They were able to touch and learn about a harmless python, Philippine Crocodile, and marine sea turtles, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of the region’s biodiversity.

The presence of Mr. Roservirico A. Tan, the RSCIG Chief and the Regional Youth Desk Officer, underscored the full support of the DENR for the PWD community. His participation reinforced the department’s commitment to inclusivity and support for all sectors of society. Additionally, students from JH Cerilles State College assisted the blind and visually impaired participants throughout the day’s activities, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for all.

In the afternoon, DENR regional office personnel participated in a special session where they enjoyed massage services provided by blind, visually impaired, and orthopedically impaired individuals. This initiative not only supported the livelihoods of the PWD community, but also promoted a deeper understanding and appreciation of their skills and contributions.

Ms. Miriam Acosta-Llanos expressed her gratitude for the collaborative efforts, stating, “This celebration is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together to support and empower our PWD community in the province of Zamboanga Del Sur. It is heartwarming to see such active participation and support from the national government, especially the DENR.”

The day’s events concluded with a renewed commitment to inclusivity and continued support for the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The DENR’s efforts, in partnership with the Provincial Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office and the broader community, highlight the importance of creating opportunities for all individuals to engage with and contribute to environmental conservation.

White Cane Safety Day 2024 was not only a celebration but also a powerful reminder of the capabilities and contributions of the PWD community, reinforcing the DENR’s mission to promote inclusivity and environmental stewardship across all sectors of society.
