Paalam, Petecio advance to semifinals in Phnom Penh

PHNOM PENH—Tokyo Olympics silver medalist breezed past the bantamweight quarterfinals and so did Paul Julyfer Bascon in the light welterweight class of the men’s boxing competitions of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games on Monday at the Chroy Changvar Center Hall G.

Paalam, 24, won 5-0 over Malaysian Daelon to reach the semifinals for a guaranteed bronze medal.

He faces aces Timor Leste’s Edegar Foe Quintas Da Silva for a shot at the gold medal on Thursday.

Bascon, on the other hand, defeated Vietnamese Thanh Dat Vu, 3-2 and will face Touch Davit of Cambodia in the semifinals.  

Nesthy Petecio, also a silver medalist in Tokyo and a former world champion, won by referee stopped contest in the first round over Minavanh Oupaxa of Laos to advance to the women’s featherweight semifinals.

She battles Vy Sreysros of Cambodia in the semifinals on Wednesday.
