New luxury fragrance celebrates the tuberose flower

Fragrance is something that evolves and is very personal. In my 20s, I loved citrusy and/or very powdery scents, and they smelled so good on me. Last year, someone gave me a bottle of the perfume that was one of my signature scents when I was in my 30s and I thought it didn’t smell the same anymore.

I realized that it wasn’t the scent itself that had changed but my preferences.

Several years ago, I learned that Madonna likes Fracas by Robert Piguet and even reportedly based her own Truth or Dare fragrance on it.

Fracas, which has tuberose with orange blossom, powdery iris and jasmine, is not for women who like the usual fruit florals. Fracas, like most tuberose scents, has been described as a “bad girl” fragrance. When it was created in 1948, the scent was dedicated to an actress who appeared naked in a 1935 film. This was considered very scandalous at that time.

Tuberose has very feminine notes that are considered powerful, seductive and elegant.

Tubéreuse Nue, the new Tom Ford Private Blend fragrance, celebrates the tuberose flower.

Also known as “Mistress of the Night,” the night-blooming tuberose flower appears delicate during the day and reveals its true potency at midnight. The tuberose flower requires nocturnal pollinators to bloom, evoking the duality of the notorious, heady scent with enticing spices to release an extravagant magnetism as night falls.

For Tubéreuse Nue, the white floral introduction exposes a deceptively innocent tuberose and jasmine, exuding a deep sensuality while timut pepper adds erotic potency to this mystical dance. At its peak, a supple suede accord exudes skin-on-skin carnality, and a soft blanket of woody patchouli and agarwood musk capture the afterglow, promising the mood endures. Buying a Tom Ford scent is a splurge. A 50ml bottle of Tubéreuse Nue is P12,600 and the 250ml bottle is P31,800. I will not even pretend to say that this is a good buy. Buying any Tom Ford Beauty product, whether it’s a lipstick or a perfume, is a luxury, especially these days. A Tom Ford scent is a splurge that you’d want to save for a date night or a special occasion. Also, the chic matte ivory bottle would look good on any countertop.

Here are some of my favorites from Tom Ford Beauty:

  • BOYS AND GIRLS LIP COLOR IN DOMINIC. Dominic is a slightly cool-toned, medium-dark red with a satin finish. This has been my go-to red lipstick for about three- to four years now. I love the smaller size. It’s funny that I recently discovered that I have three tubes of this. Disclosure: One was a gift from the brand.
  • NOIR DE NOIR FRAGRANCE. “Noir de Noir is dark, sexy and indulgent. Yin collides with Yang featuring black rose, black truffle and patchouli for an intense, sensual awakening,” is how Tom Ford describes this fragrance. I love Noir de Noir because it’s a scent that suits my body chemistry.
  • CASABLANCA LIP COLOR. Casablanca, one of the brand’s most popular lipsticks, is described as a “reddened plum” with a cream finish. There are many lipsticks that look like Casablanca but I say this is unique because it fades well into a tint-like finish and if you’re having a long day, you don’t need to retouch.
  • SHADE AND ILLUMINATE SOFT RADIANCE FOUNDATION. At P7,000 a bottle, this is an investment foundation. It contains hyaluronic acid, Balsam Copaiba, Andiroba Oil, and Acai Oil, plus Noni extract that helps reduce inflammation and redness. I use this more as a concealer than a foundation. The formula contains light-diffusing powders to harness light and shadow (which is why it also works as a concealer) and it has SPF 50.
