OVER 58,000 workers benefitted from the government programs during its Labor Day celebration during the weekend.

As of noon Saturday, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) reported 58,082 workers have applied in its online job fair.

Of these, 238 were “hired on the spot,” while another 3,141 became near-hires and would still have to go through additional interviews or submit more requirements before being immediately hired.

Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III said they also signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) for the hiring of 5,754 displaced informal sector workers as contact tracers.

The number of beneficiaries was higher than the 5,000 target beneficiaries of the program, which was initially announced by DOLE.

“A total amount of P280,714,644 chargeable to the 2021 General Appropriations Act funds of DOLE budget shall be used to employ 5,754 workers to be engaged as contact tracers,” Bello said.

Last, the government finalized, during DOLE’s Labor Summit last Saturday, the National Employment Recovery Strategy (NERS), which will provide relief to workers who lost their jobs during the pandemic.

President Duterte was supposed to also issue a new Executive Order to institutionalize the commitments for the over P1.1 trillion NERs initiatives, expected to benefit 1.4 million workers.

However, Bello told BusinessMirror they are still waiting for information from the Office of the Executive Secretary one whether the issuance was already signed by the President.
