The Department of Agriculture (DA) regional office 9 has revealed that they temporarily suspended the KADIWA On Wheels or Katuwang sa Diwa at Gawa (KADIWA) para sa masaganang ani at mataas na kita in region 9.

Melba Wee, DA 9 Assistant Regional Director in a phone interview said, they suspended the program last June 30 due to the increasing number of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases.

Aside from these, she said, according to the farmers, since it’s rainy season farmers are currently planting and manning their crops.

“They will first attend to their crops (referring to the farmers) and another is the influx of Covid-19 cases,” Wee said.

More than 100 farmers coming from the region are participating in the KADIWA on Wheels.

The assistant regional director said, if the program will resume, they will do it once a month.

Kadiwa was first launched in barangay Tetuan, Zamboanga City on April 01, 2020 in coordination with the Local Government Unit of Zamboanga City – Office of the City Agriculturist, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the National Food Authority (NFA), and the local Barangay Councils.

During the duration of the program, more than 24 barangays were served in Zamboanga City alone.

While communities remain under enhanced quarantine, KADIWA primarily brought food and food supply closer to people’s homes. It served as a mobile market with fresh vegetable harvests, agricultural crops, fish, eggs, rice, processed products and other basic groceries at affordable prices. (R.G. Antonet A. Go)
