MATNOG, Sorsogon — Local authorities immediately conducted rescue and retrieval operations following a deadly landslide that struck Barangay Bariis in the early hours of January 17, 2026.
Personnel from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), together with national government agencies including the Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the Philippine Army, were swiftly deployed to the affected area.
Despite the prompt response, the incident claimed the lives of two residents. The landslide was triggered by continuous and heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Ada.
Barangay officials had earlier advised residents to remain alert and take precautionary measures amid the persistent rains, prior to the incident.
The remains of the victims have been brought to a funeral parlor for proper disposition. The Municipal Government of Matnog expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and reiterated its appeal for residents in landslide-prone areas to heed advisories and safety warnings, especially during severe weather conditions.
