The Solid Waste Management Board convened today, March 6, 2026, at the DTI-SSF 2F ICT Building to discuss critical environmental and infrastructure projects. Presided over by Councilor Jessie “Butch” DV. Abonite, Jr., Chair of the Committee on Environment, the session focused on several key updates regarding the Sanitary Landfill (SLF). These include the planned concreting of the unpaved road leading to the site and the repair of electrical posts damaged during previous typhoons. Other slated improvements involve the installation of new signages, repairs to the SLF field office, and the disposal of broken equipment currently lodged at the facility.
A major highlight of the discussion was the proposal for new safety protocols for waste collection workers, developed in collaboration with students from the University of Saint Anthony (USANT). To implement these measures, a dedicated training seminar is scheduled for tomorrow, March 7.
Beyond landfill operations, Councilor Butch brought urgent road safety concerns to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) regarding unfinished concreting at the boundary of San Agustin, San Isidro, and Perpetual Help, which has been the site of several accidents. The DPWH representative committed to referring this matter to their construction division for immediate resolution. Additionally, the board addressed waste management along NIA Road in San Agustin, where the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) will coordinate with barangays to install informational tarpaulins and monitor food cart activities.
The meeting was well-attended by a wide array of stakeholders, including representatives from the City Legal, Engineering, Health, and Agriculture offices, alongside the DepEd, the Iriga Chamber of Commerce, and various sectors representing senior citizens, religious groups, and the Muslim Vendor Association.
