LOOK: In support of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s campaign to address and counteract the spread of misinformation, the Police Regional Office 5 headed by PBGEN NESTOR C BABAGAY JR, ARD, in collaboration with Radyo Pilipinas Albay, the Philippine Information Agency – Bicol, and the Department of Education, organized an Anti-Fake News Consultative Forum on August 13, 2025 held at PRO 5 Conference Room, Camp Simeon Ola in Legazpi City, Albay.
Among the topics discussed were Understanding Disinformaiton, Misinformation and Malinformation discussed by Mr. Ramil A Marianito, RD, PIA, ROV; National landscape on Disinformation, Misinformaiton and Malinformaiton, Fake news and the Resiliency of Public Security which was discussed by Ms. Joaana Marie O Yocampo, Senior Program Specialist Social Mobilization Unit, DepEd Naga City; Journalism Ethics and Ethical Information Sharing by Ms. Nancy I. Mediavillo, Station Manager, Radyo Pilipinas Albay; and Challenges in Cybercrime Investigation by PCpt Angelo A Babagay, Team Leader, Camarines Sur Provincial Cyber Response Team RACU 5.
The forum served as a platform for discussion among government agencies, educators, media representatives, and community stakeholders on the pressing issue of fake news, particularly its rapid spread through social media channels. The event sought to deepen the public’s understanding of how false or misleading information can influence opinions, disrupt communities, and erode trust in institutions.
PBGEN ROGELIO Z RAYMUNDO JR., DRDA, PRO5, representing PBGEN BABAGAY JR. said that the PNP is committed to fighting fake news through cyber patrols, quick action on hoaxes, and close coordination with agencies like the NBI and DICT.
He stressed that law enforcement alone cannot solve the problem, calling for media, government, educators, community leaders, and citizens to work together by promoting truth, practicing digital literacy, and avoiding the spread of false information.
“My call is for united and continuous action. Let us move beyond talk, communicate better, work together on awareness campaigns, and set up quick reporting and response systems. Help us build a culture of truth and responsible digital citizenship in Bicol,” he concluded.
