Iriga: Fire victims in Legazpi City, Albay and Bato, Camarines Sur receive immediate aid from DSWD Bicol

Fire victims, including a casualty, received immediate relief assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office V – Bicol Region on January 9, 2025.

A tragic fire broke out at approximately 4:00 a.m. on January 8, 2025, in Barangay 17 Ilawod, Legazpi City, claiming the life of a 19-year-old student.

The blaze raged for over two hours before firefighters from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in Legazpi declared it extinguished. Three establishments, including an unregistered boarding house where the victim resided, were completely destroyed.

According to witnesses, the victim was unable to escape due to the rapid spread of the flames, succumbing to suffocation. The DSWD Bicol is now coordinating with the bereaved family to provide immediate assistance, including funeral aid.

Additionally, the DSWD Bicol’s Disaster Response Management Division delivered relief goods to two other tenants of the boarding house who were affected by the fire. The assistance, consisting of family food packs and non-food relief items, totaling to PHP 13,633.36.

An in-depth investigation into the fire is currently underway by the BFP.

Meanwhile, another fire-affected family from Barangay San Miguel, Bato, Camarines Sur, also received assistance from DSWD Bicol.

The family was provided with relief items, including family food packs and non-food essentials worth PHP 8,435.68. In addition, they will receive PHP 10,000.00 in financial aid under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program of the Department.
