The DOH Bicol has recorded 23 cases of Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in the region as of July 12, 2025, according to the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU).
According to Dr. Xavier Vallejo, Medical Officer III, the contagious viral disease primarily affects children under five years of age but can also occur in children up to 10 years old.
Its symptoms include painful mouth sores; skin rashes with red spots and blisters on the palms, soles, buttocks, and genital area; as well as fever, sore throat, loss of appetite, and fatigue.
HFMD spreads through close personal contact, respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, contact with blister fluid, contaminated objects or surfaces, and exposure to infected feces.
The DOH Bicol is urging the public to strictly observe minimum public health standards, including covering the mouth or wearing a mask when coughing or sneezing, frequent handwashing, disinfecting surfaces and staying home when sick.
Health department assured the public that mild or uncomplicated HFMD cases are usually self-limiting and can be managed through home isolation. However, medical consultation is advised if symptoms persist beyond 10 days or if severe signs develop. (DOH5/NRB)
