Government resources were mobilized Wednesday for disaster response, as flash floods hit 10 barangays in low lying areas following intermittent rains spawned by intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

Initial records from the City Social Welfare and Development Office reveal that some 1,042 families were affected by the flooding in 10 barangays. Some families were evacuated to higher grounds at the height of the flooding but returned to their houses a few hours after the water subsided.

Of the initial 1,042 families affected, 204 were in Culianan, 300 in Bolong, 120 in Tugbungan, 40 in Guiwan, 200 in Tumaga, 53 in Sta. Maria (Brillantes Compound), 50 in Sangali, 1 in Cabaluay and 74 in Tetuan, according to City Social Welfare and Development Officer Socorro Rojas.

For assessment were Bunguiao  and Manicahan including Sangali and Cabaluay.

Rojas said food assistance was initially provided to the families and community kitchens were established in Sangali and Bolong.

Zamboanga City and the entire Zamboanga Peninsula as well as the neighboring provinces of Tawi-tawi and Sulu have been experiencing rains and thunderstorms since Tuesday due to intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ).

Combined forces from the Zamboanga City Police Office, Philippine Coast Guard, 74th Infantry Battalion, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and the barangays spearheaded response efforts in the hardest hit barangays.

Mayor Beng Climaco has urged all Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (BDRRMCs) to continue monitoring the situation in their respective areas of jurisdiction, as the weather condition remains unstable. (LGU Public Information Office)
