President Rodrigo R. Duterte approved the dismissal of the former Philippine ambassador to Brazil Marichu Mauro for the maltreatment of a Filipino household helper.
In his public address on Monday evening, Duterte said he affirmed the recommendation of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to sanction Mauro for the incident.
The penalty imposed against the former diplomat is dismissal from service with accessory penalties of cancellation of eligibility, forfeiture of retirement benefits, perpetual disqualification from holding public office and being barred from taking civil service examination.
“That is the penalty [for her action]. I said there rules to be followed. If you don’t want to follow, then that is your risk that if something goes wrong, it is going to hit you,” Duterte said.
Mauro was recalled last year after a video of her berating and repeatedly hurting her 51-year old household helper circulated online.
Mauro started her tour of duty in Brazil in 2018.
