A Philippine Serpent-eagle (Spilornis holospilus) was retrieved by personnel from Manukan Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO) at Barangay Poblacion, Jose Dalman, Zamboanga del Norte on September 16, 2022.
CENRO Manukan personnel narrated that they were able to observe a gathering of local residents looking at a bird along the highway while on their way to Sindangan to conduct field work. They identified it immediately as a Philippine Serpent eagle.
Accordingly, the said wildlife was rescued by children at their farmlot in Brgy. Balatakan, Jose Dalman, Zamboanga del Norte.
The said wildlife is in good condition after conducting physical examination and observation, hence it was immediately released back to its natural habitat at the forested area of Brgy. Libuton, Manukan, Zamboanga del Norte .
The Philippine Serpent eagle falls under category “Other Wildlife Species” pursuant to Section 4 of DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09 known as the Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Fauna and their categories.
It is classified as “Least Concern” by the International Union of Conservation of Nature (IUCN), however its population trend is decreasing.
They are protected under Republic Act 9147 or the “Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act”, which prohibits anybody from collecting, hunting, injuring and killing/destroying of wildlife species, including handling/possessing of wildlife without permits/licenses.
