The Department of Education (DepEd) on Friday clarified that the August 23 start date for the opening of classes is just a “proposal” and not yet final.

“The Department of Education would like to emphasize that the President has the final decision on the opening of the school year, in accordance with Republic Act 11480,” the DepEd said in a statement, noting the agency is mandated to open the school year not later than the last day of August under Republic Act 11480, unless President Rodrigo R. Duterte “intervenes”.

“We will be proposing various options for the President’s consideration,” the DepEd said.

The August 23 proposal, the DepEd reiterated, is only one of the options.

“Nonetheless, we are still conducting policy consultation and review with concerned stakeholders to determine the most appropriate course of action on this matter. We shall issue the official guidelines for School Year 2021-202 calendar soon,” the DepEd said.
