Davao City – The first few days of the popular Roxas Night Market has been “orderly and manageable,” the chief of the Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) said Monday.

Angel Sumagaysay, PSSCC head, noted that since the city’s primary night market reopened on March 24, they have been getting good feedback from market-goers on the ground.

“The first five days of operation have been orderly and manageable. We can see that the Dabawenyos really missed the night market as there were many visitors but of course, the foot traffic can still be controlled by the security and safety cluster,” Sumagaysay told the Philippine News Agency in an interview.

Around 200 soldiers, police, and members of the civilian security unit are deployed to guard the security of the vicinity.

Task Force Davao (TFD) commander Col. Darren Comia said that measures are being implemented to avoid incidents such as the Sept. 2, 2016 bombing that killed 17 people.

The reopening of the night market forms part of the economic recovery initiatives of the city government as discussed by the Davao Coronavirus Disease 2019 Task Force.

At least 286 food, ready-to-wear, accessories vendors, and massage therapists have been approved to operate for three months this year.

Of the number, 56 are food vendors, 65 are ready-to-wear vendors, 100 are massage therapists, and 65 are accessories vendors.

Celerino Eralino, city economic enterprise office head, said those who earned slots for the March 24 to June 24 duration can return in 2023 and join the raffle again.

It will be the same process for those who will win slots for July to September and October to December this year, he noted. (Christine Cudis)
