THE Bureau of Immigration announced on Wednesday  the arrest of a Taiwanese national who had been hiding from authorities for 17 years after an arrest warrant was issued against him for attempting to kill a compatriot.

In a report to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente, the BI’s fugitive search unit (FSU) identified the suspect as 53-year-old Huang Kuan-I, who was arrested last Monday morning in Real, Quezon.  Huang was arrested by virtue of an arrest warrant issued against him by the Hualien prosecutor’s office in Taiwan in 2004.

Information provided by the BI revealed that Huang was reportedly convicted for shooting and seriously wounding his victim after a heated argument.

BI-FSU acting chief Rendel Ryan Sy said aside from being  an undesirable alien, Huang will also be deported for being an undocumented alien since  his passport already expired in February 2019 and has not been renewed since.

Sy said based on the agency’s records, Huang arrived in the country in April 2009 in an attempt to evade prosecution and sentence for his crime in his homeland.

The BI said Huang is now under detention at the BI warden facility in Taguig City awaiting his deportation.

His name will also be included in the BI blacklist in order to prevent him from returning to the country.
