The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) backed calls for a probe on the killing of another labor leader during the weekend.

“These kinds of incidents should be investigated to see those responsible. They should be made answerable for the killing of these labor leaders,” Labor and Employment Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III said in an online press briefing on Monday.

He issued the statement after labor coalition condemned the death Dandy Miguel, president of Lakas ng Nagkakaisang Manggagawa ng Fuji Electric and also an officer of the Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU).

Nagkaisa expressed alarm over the Dandy’s death, which it said is part of the  “systematic campaign to eliminate trade union leaders.”

“More than 50 TU (trade unionises) leaders and organizers have been gunned down since the start of the Duterte administration,” Nagkaisa said.

“Killing trade unionists is abhorable and has no place in a civilized society. Worse, this barbarity is now happening on a regular basis. Enough! These killings must be stopped immediately,” it added.

The coalition of the country’s biggest labor unions extended its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Miguel.

Bello said the issue is expected to be discussed during his scheduled meeting with 25 labor union leaders.

He noted the meeting primarily aims to get inputs from stakeholders for the crafting of the government National Employment Recovery Strategy (NERS) to address the labor impact of the pandemic.
