Basin, Gomobos reign supreme in 200m in ROTC Games

JEROME MARC DAVE BASIN and Christine Tolin Gomobos posted the fastest times in the 200 meters races in the for Army bracket of the Reserved Officers Training Corps (ROTC) Games Mindanao Leg at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex Monday in Zamboanga City.

Basin, 20 and an Industrial Management sophomore at Tangub City State College, clocked  23.9 seconds to rule the men’s race while the 20-year-old Gomobos of Jose Rizal Memorial State University in Dipolog City booked 28.2 seconds to win the women’s event.

John Barey Asdane of the Northern Mindanao State University-Zamboanga City  ruled the Air Force race in 26.1 seconds with Nerisha Nicole Aringoy topping the women’s contest in 29.1 seconds.

Navy had 21-year-old Raphael de la Cruz winning the men’s race in 24.4 seconds and Shalora Tuahan emerging as the fastest female runner in 30.2 seconds.

The athletics competitions were delayed for three hours after a heavy downpour rendered the track and field unplayable, forcing stadium staff to use heavy-duty blowers to dry the facility.

Only four finals events were played in the afternoon because of the delay.

In women’s volleyball at the Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic University Gym, Davao De Oro State College (DDOSC) opened its campaign in the Army division with a 25, 17, 25-14, 25-22 win over University of Mindanao-Davao City.

Head coach Donita Rose Buldoz said that her team managed to shake off nervousness from playing in a major event for the first time.

“I’m very thankful to my players. This is our first time playing in a tournament like this,” Buldoz said. “After I talked to them, they maintain composure and their confidence went high. This is a big win for us.”

Competitions in boxing start Tuesday at the Zamboanga Peninsula Polytechnic University and kickboxing at the Western Mindanao State University Gym, where arnis will also be played starting Wednesday.

Basketball’s men 3×3 commnces Thursday at the JFEM complex’s City Sports Coliseum.
