Bacolod City – Three vessels ran aground off the coast of Negros Occidental as super typhoon Odette battered Negros Occidental on December 16 and 17.

However, the Philippine Coast Guard said that there was no oil spill.

Based on information released by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Negros Occidental, the three vessels that ran aground were M/T Mary Queen of Hope, LCT Citic 102, and M/V Jake Vincent Dos.

The M/T Mary Queen of Hope ran aground at Campomanes Bay in Barangay Maricalum, Sipalay City, on December 18.

The vessel, according to PCG, left the BREDCO Port anchorage area in Bacolod City last December 15 in order to seek shelter in Sipalay City.

When Odette slammed into southern Negros on Thursday night, the vessel’s anchor had reportedly snapped causing it to go adrift until it finally ran aground.

While its right engine was damaged, the PCG inspection team, however, did not find any damage on its hull which can cause an oil spill.

LCT Citic 102, meanwhile, ran aground at a local oil firm’s pipeline in the shoreline of Barangay Banago in Bacolod City. The Coast Guard said it had not caused any damage to the pipeline.

The vessel’s captain was later advised by the PCG to loosen its anchor during high tide so as to prevent it from damaging the pipeline.

On the other hand, the M/V Jake Vincent Dos that also ran aground at the vicinity of the BREDCO Port early morning Friday, had already been abandoned for two years.

Investigations of the PCG further showed that the vessel went adrift dragging its anchor it finally reached a shallow area of the port during the typhoon. PCG also noted that the vessel had an empty fuel tank.
