Deaths due to dengue in the province of Negros Occidental and highly urbanized Bacolod City were reported at 20 by health authorities, with cases up by more than 300 percent, compared to the previous year.

The Provincial Health Office (PHO) logged 5,338 cases in Negros Occidental from January to October 26 this year, an increase of 331.16 percent, compared to 1,292 cases in the same period of 2023.

The PHO also recorded 15 deaths.

On the other hand, the Bacolod City Health Office reported an increase of dengue cases of 312 percent, from 482 recorded last year, to 1,987 current cases with five deaths, for the period covering January to Oct. 19 of this year.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Girlie Pinongan, however, said that the number of dengue cases in the province has been slowly decreasing over the past weeks.

Pinongan added that PHO continues to link up with barangays, especially those with dengue-related deaths, advocating for the cleaning of identified mosquito breeding grounds, among others.

Bago City remains on top of the list, having the most dengue cases at 602, although there was no fatality.

Mayor Nicholas Yulo said the dengue cases in Bago City are lower compared to last year.

As Bago City is one of the more populated local government units outside of Bacolod City, the number of residents hit by dengue cases is not much, in terms of percentage, Yulo said.

Still, he added, the Bago City Health Office was not remiss in its duty of taking immediate action against dengue cases, by campaigning not only in barangays, but schools, as well. (Gilbert Bayoran via tvds)
