BACOLOD CITY – A resolution urging the Bacolod City Health Office to immediately initiate and implement preventive measures against leptospirosis in Bacolod City, was approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

Authored by Councilor Em Ang, the resolution said the City of Bacolod has a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of its residents.

The Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) has reported a concerning increase in admissions for leptospirosis cases, with a significant number of cases arising from southern local government units (LGUs) of the province, it said.

Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial infection that can lead to severe health complications if not addressed promptly, particularly in areas affected by flooding, the resolution said.

Recent flooding caused by Typhoons Tino, Uwan, and Verbena has exacerbated conditions for leptospirosis transmission, increasing the risk of cases rising significantly in the community, it said.

The Bacolod City Health Office plays a pivotal role in developing and initiating effective health measures to protect the community from this public health threat, the resolution said.

The City Council of Bacolod City is, therefore urging the Bacolod City Health Office, through Mayor Greg Gasataya, to take immediate action in implementing preventive measures against leptospirosis. This includes, but is not limited to the following: initiation of a city-wide campaign to educate residents about the risks of leptospirosis, particularly following flooding events; this campaign should communicate preventive steps they can take, including avoiding wading through floodwaters and ensuring proper sanitation practices.

The resolution recommends that a solution of 1:10 dilution of bleach be utilized to wash and spray highly affected barangays and areas. This method should be prioritized in known flood-prone areas where water stagnation occurs.

Collaboration with barangay officials, local leaders, and health workers to disseminate information effectively and provide support in disinfection efforts, ensuring that every barangay has access to the necessary materials for preventive measures is also being recommended, as well as monitoring and reporting on the incidence of leptospirosis cases in collaboration with local hospitals and clinics, ensuring that health authorities stay informed of any spikes in cases so that timely public health responses can be made.

Provision of resources such as protective gear and sanitation supplies to barangays for use in the cleaning and disinfection processes, ensuring that these vital areas are equipped to handle the situation proactively, it added.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod will provide support for any initiatives or programs that arise from this resolution aimed at combating the threat of leptospirosis, ensuring that the health and safety of Bacolod City residents remain a top priority. (Chrysee Semillano via tvds)
