Bacolod City – The tent city in Sitio Bingig, Barangay 3, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, is on its way to completion as 300 of the 395 family tents for use by Kanlaon evacuees, have already been established.
As of February 14, three common toilet and bath areas, as well as three water tanks have been installed at the temporary shelter, through the efforts of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), with support from the Himamaylan City government.
The installation of electrical facilities is also currently underway, according to a press statement from the Himamaylan City government.
As the restiveness of Kanlaon Volcano continues, a total of 2,760 families, comprising 8,803 individuals, are still staying in 23 evacuation centers, while 3,028 displaced families, composed of 9,760 individuals, are staying outside evacuation centers.
The tent city, according to OCD, is designated to house evacuees from neighboring local government units (LGUs), should the alert level for Kanlaon Volcano escalate.
The establishment of additional evacuation centers is being eyed in the cities of Victorias, Silay, Bacolod, and San Carlos in Negros Occidental, and Guihulngan in Negros Oriental, in case of another eruption of Kanlaon volcano.
Alert Level 3 remains hoisted over Kanlaon Volcano, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. (Gilbert Bayoran via The Visayan Daily Star)
