Bacolod City – Authorities reported recently that the province of Negros Occidental sustained no major damage to property after the province was placed under tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 on the weekend due to super typhoon ‘Uwan.’

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) Chief Irene Bel Ploteña confirmed that despite the strong winds felt in the province, no major flash floods or damage were reported across the area.

Meanwhile, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) of Sipalay reported that a brief 20-minute spell of strong winds and rain triggered a storm surge along the city’s beachfront on Sunday.

However, the effects of the typhoon were generally minimal, with only minor clearing operations being conducted along the coastline and in areas affected by a landslide in Barangay Camp Valdez.

“As of now, we are closely monitoring the water level in the main rivers of Sipalay since the water suddenly rose, even though there is no rain,” Sipalay CDRRMO Coordinator Dionilo Bogtae said.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has taken charge of the clearing, while the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is assisting with flushing operations.

All 141 families, or 2,739 individuals from 12 barangays, who were temporarily situated in 23 evacuation centers across the city, returned to their homes yesterday.

Bogtae emphasized that the city government remains on heightened alert, continuously monitoring coastal and riverside areas to ensure the safety of residents in case of sudden water level changes.

In the northern part of the province, a 12-year-old girl sustained injuries after their house was damaged by strong winds in Cadiz City.

“That was only a minor injury, but after she received medical attention, she immediately went home and is now safe,” Mayor Salvador Escalante Jr. said yesterday.

The Office of the Civil Defense in Negros Island Region (OCD-NIR) also confirmed that no major flooding or landslides occurred in the region after the weather disturbance on the weekend. (Richard Caballero Jr via tvds)
