THE Philippines’ Mark Jay Bacojo brought home two silver medals from the recent Hong Kong Bauhinia U18 Chess Invitational hosted by the Hong Kong Chess Federation at the Regal Oriental Hotel in Kowloon City.

Bacojo, 16, settled for second place behind 11-year-old Singaporean Elliot Wong Yen-Hsiu in the standard category and also bagged silver in the blitz contest.

Bacojo won his last two matches for 5.5 points in the seven-round Swiss System tournament with Wong earning 6.0 points to rule the event that gathered players aged 10 to 17 from Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong.

“Although chess is a mind sport, a four- to five-hour game demands no less energy than a typical physical sport, and the players also need to put in much time in training,” said Geoffrey Kao, honorary president of the Hong Kong federation.

“I hope that more and more people in Asia will learn about chess as a mentally and physically rewarding intellectual sport and support our players,” he added.

Ayana Nicole Usman and Alexandra Sydney Paez were the other Filipinos in the tournament.
