The Theological Commission of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in the Vatican has given a “unanimous affirmative vote” to declare Archbishop Teofilo Camomot “venerable” bringing him closer to sainthood.

In a post in its Facebook account last Wednesday, the Archdiocese of Cebu announced the 9-person Theological Commission unanimously voted that Camomot possessed heroic virtues.

This will allow the Commission of Bishops and Cardinals of the said Congregation to review the cause of Beatification and Canonization of Camomot.

“Upon the completion of their study, the cause will be presented to the Holy Father for this approval. Then Bishop Camomot will be considered venerable,” the Archdiocese of Cebu said.

Before he could proceed to the final stage of sainthood, the Vatican must be able to attribute to him two miracles after people prayed for his intercession.

If this condition is met, it will result in Camomot’s canonization and he will be officially declared a saint.

Born in Cogon, Carcar on March 3, 1914, Camomot is known for establishing the Carmelite Tertiaries of the Blessed Eucharist, which is now known as the Daughters of Saint Therese.

He also became the Auxiliary Bishop of Jaro, Iloilo as well as the co-adjudicator of Cagayan De Oro.

Camomot died in 1988 in a car crash in San Fernando, Cebu.
