Zamboanga City witnessed the first-ever Paralympics Games, a friendly sports competition for special athletes, held as part of the 86th Dia de Zamboanga activities from Feb. 23-25 at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports complex (JEMSC).
The 3-day Para Games de Zamboanga, facilitated by the City Sports Division and the Persons with Disabilities Unit (PDAU) under the City Social Welfare Office, was conducted successfully and ended on a high note. It consisted of 6 sports events: chess, athletics, table tennis, swimming and sitting volleyball.
Mayor John Dalipe who saw to it that the Para Games is included in the 86th Dia Calendar of events said there is so much potential in sports for athletes with disabilities as he vowed to support PWD endeavors to make the initiative grow bigger and stronger.
City Sports Director Dr. Cecil Atilano during the awarding ceremonies Saturday, February 25 thanked the tournament managers Jhun Tubog, Yayan Dexter, John Mark Ijirani, Rene Sta Teresa and Carlo Mark Florendo; Henry SalacĀ PDAU coordinator andĀ Kerwin Serrano President PWD sector.
