THE Zamboanga Valientes nipped the Zamboanga Sibugay Warriors, 87-86, to rule the Pilipinas VisMin Super Cup 25U held over the weekend at the Centralli Sports and Events Complex in Zamboanga City.

It was a seesaw game throughout with both teams engaging in defensive stops while exchanging baskets that thrilled the thousands of Zamboangueños who watched the game live.

But Emilio Aguinaldo College team captain JC Luciano was fouled by Kevin Dinglasa on his drive and made two pressure-packed free throws to snatch the win for the Valientes.

“That was an exciting finish, we were down we didn’t give up, and that’s why we are proud of them,” Zamboanga Valientes coach Bobedick de los Santos said. “I’m very proud of each one of my players after making history as the first champions of VisMin 25U Championship.”

Philip Job Alcantara led the Valientes with 23 points, two rebounds, five assists and three steals. He was named Finals Most Valuable Player.

The victory was a sweet revenge for the Valientes after they lost to Sibugay in their first meeting.

The Isabela Basilan Pirates and Misor Mariners RCC also competed in the tournament.

Team owner Rolando Junnie Navarro said the Valientes proved themselves ready for bigger competitions.

“Congratulations to the team for winning the tournament 25U championship. It only means that we are ready to compete in higher level,” said Navarro, who reaffirmed the Valientes’ participation in the Asean Basketball League Invitational Cup starting on January 2.

Zamboanga Valientes CEO Cory Navarro and Mike Venezuela of MLV Accounting were also proud of their squad and thanked Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe, Vice Mayor Pinpin Pareja and Rep. Khymer Olaso for their support.

Founded by the late Lando Navarro in 2006, the Zamboanga Valientes also support their local athletes including Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, bronze boxing medalist Eumir Felix Marcial and former world pro boxing title challenger Jonas Sultan.
