Zamboanga: Paeng damage to agri-fisheries totals P67.21M

The City Agriculturist Office said tropical storm Paeng inundated a total of ₱ 67,214,077.45 worth of agricultural crops including fishery products and resources in the city.

The damage covered 238.60 hectares of farms planted with agricultural crops and fishery products across the 6 agricultural districts.

A total of 1,317 fisherfolks and 476 farmers for a total of 1,793, were affected.

In her final report submitted to the Office of the City Mayor, City Agriculturist Carmencita Sanchez said the destruction was hardest hit on the fishery sector with ₱ 44,807,900.00 total losses followed by agricultural crops at ₱ 22,406,177.45.

Under the fishery sector, 711.5 hectares of seaweed farms were destroyed with damage reaching ₱ 33,417,000.00. Areas affected were barangays under Tumaga, Ayala, Culianan, Manicahan, Curuan and Vitali Agricultural districts.

Some 292.04 hectares of fishponds with harvestable milkfish, prawns and crabs in barangays under Tumaga, Culianan, Manicahan and Curuan districts were severely destroyed with damages reaching ₱ 9,260,900.00.

At least 11 bancas and some fishing gears in Sinunuc, Cawit, Labuan and Ayala were destroyed due to strong waves – all amounting to ₱ 573,000. Some post-harvest facilities such as fish drying plants worth ₱ 1,100,000.00.

Meanwhile, under agricultural crops, a total of 91.86 hectares of farms planted with assorted vegetables, banana and papaya were destroyed with damages reaching ₱ 16,485,382.90.

Rice fields totaling 119.4 hectares were badly damaged due to massive flooding with losses reaching up to ₱ 4,409,402.60 while 27.04 hectares of corn fields were ruined with damage reaching ₱ 1,511,392.
