Surigao City – Port cops and animal quarantine agents intercepted last Saturday, February 11, close to 600 kilograms of pork chorizo found to have been transported to the Port of Surigao from Cebu using fake shipping documents.

Acting on confidential tip, Port Police Corporal Donking Gonzalez and operatives, together with Bureau of Animal (BAI) Veterinary Quarantine Agents led by Paz Lansilay, flagged down a cargo truck bearing plate number 180107, driven by a certain Eduardo Falcon Roluna who claimed to be a resident of Purok Cabungan, Bagong Lungsod, Tandag City and found the undocumented foodstuffs.

BAI agents said that its operatives have been closely monitoring shipments of animal products at the Port of Surigao for a week after receiving information that some persons are using the port as conduit to illegally ship raw and processed meat products to various areas in Northern Mindanao.

With a retail value amounting to more or less PhP 100,000.00, the illegally-shipped chorizos is allegedly owned by a certain Bernadeth Ocaba of Tandag City.

The local office of the Bureau of Animal Industry sent back the intercepted meat products to Cebu City in accordance with policies controlling the entry of livestock and poultry to prevent the spread of dangerous animal diseases.
