Coast Guard Station Surigao del Norte headed by the Station Commander CG CDR ELAINE R PANGILINAN together Coast Guard Special Operations Unit – Northeastern Mindanao (CGSOU-NEM) and PNP Maritime Unit XIII participated in the SCUBASURERO activity held at the seawaters off Surigao City Boulevard last 29 June 2021.
The activity was spearheaded by Caraga Mine Environmental Management Council Inc. (CMEMCI) in partnership with Taganito Mining Corporation in line with the Proclamation No. 237 declaring the month of June as the Philippine Environmental Month with this year’s theme, “ Ecosystem Restoration: Reimagine, Recreate, Restore”. The activity was purposely to give time and efforts towards protection, enhancement, and development of the country’s environment.
“SCUBASURERO” is a term coined from scuba diving and “basurero” (garbage collector) purposely to clean marine debris in some parts of the ocean. It has become an underwater clean-up program in order to preserve the marine eco-system for the benefit of marine creatures.
CG CDR. PANGILINAN stressed that being a self-disciplined citizen of the country and changing the individual’s behavior which causes pollution will lead to a cleaner and safer environment.
