National Housing Authority To Build 400 Houses For Lumads In Talaingod, Davao Del Norte

Davao del Norte – Members of the Ata Manobo tribe in Talaingod, Davao del Norte witnessed the groundbreaking rites and time capsule laying of the Balai Hirogo-Unan housing project in Sitio Basak, Brgy. Sto. Niño.

The project is just one of the four (4) sites in Talaingod where NHA-XI is set to build four hundred (400) housing units for indigenous peoples amounting to Eighty Million Pesos (₱ 80, 000,000.00).

Talaingod Mayor Jonnie A. Libayao together with the other officials from the Provincial Government formally received from NHA-XI Regional Manager Engr. Zenaida M. Cabiles checks amounting to Sixty Million Pesos (₱ 60, 000,000.00) as initial funds  for the construction of Balai Hirago-Unan and the three (3) other IP housing sites namely; Balai Himulayanan in Brgy. Dagohoy, Balai Hibatanan in Brgy. Palma Gil, and Balai Pamanoykan in Sitio Cuyas, Brgy. Sto. Niño.

Mayor Libayao thanked President Rodrigo R. Duterte for fulfilling his promise of providing adequate shelter for the Lumads in remote villages in his town.

“Indigenous peoples are our government’s priority,” said Alfonso Alvarez, Chief of Staff of Davao del Norte District 1 Representative Pantaleon Alvarez, who represented the lawmaker during the ceremony.

National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) Davao del Norte Provincial Director Roger Lumban meanwhile; urged the Ata Manobos to support the government initiatives intended for them.

Among the beneficiaries of Balai Hirogo-Unan is Datu Karyo Mangguyod who admitted he was once a supporter of the communist group.  He said, the housing project is his lifelong dream which is about to come true and vowed to protect it. (Francis Magbanua-NHA)
