Davao del Norte—Municipal Administrator Atty. Elisa Evangelista-Lapiña on Saturday warned the public against a scam that solicitS money from individuals who reportedly afflicted with  ailments because of exposure to a pesticide.

Dubbed as “chemical victim” scam, Lapiña urged Tomasinos not to accommodate individuals who are soliciting money in exchange of expediting the lawsuit against companies involved in the pesticide case.

“One thing they must check is the case number if it appropriately filed before the courts.  In our legal system, case number is used to identify the year the case was filed, the office in which it was filed, and the judicial officer(s) to whom it is assigned,” Lapiña said.

She said the victims should also check whether or not they are transacting with a lawyer or a conman.

Lapiña said her office continues to receive reports about the modus operandi of “chemical victim” scam who target Tomasino residents who reportedly filed a class-action suit against companies in the so-called pesticide case.

“I hope all Tomasinos will be more vigilant against scammers. We are now in a trying times as we are in a pandemic. Many groups or con artists will dupe and to push their selfish interest by asking money from unsuspecting victims,” she said.
