In todays press conference December 27, 2023, the Department of Health Bicol Center for Health Development (DOH Bicol CHD) warned the public of the dangers of using firecrackers. The activity is part of the Iwas Paputok campaign of the Department, in partnership with the different enforcing agencies,  to prevent Firework-Related Injuries (FWRI) in anticipation of the New Year festivities.

“It is our collective responsibility as champions of health and safety to establish proactive measures in order to prevent accidents, reduce cases, and celebrate the holidays safely and healthily,” Dr. Rosa Maria B. Rempillo, OIC-Assistant Regional Director said.

Ms. Julie Ann Legaspi-Granadino, Regional Program Manager of the Violence and Injury Prevention Program, noted that there have been 8 FWRI cases in the Bicol Region from December 21, 2023 to December 26, 2023, marking a 100% increase compared to the same time period in 2022.

She mentioned that out of the 8 patients, the youngest is aged 7 and the oldest is 40. The type of injuries reported were blast/burn with no amputation and injuries to the eye. Meanwhile, the type of firecracker that caused the highest reported injuries is improvised canon (boga).

The DOH Bicol CHD encourages the public to use alternative noise makers or participate in community fireworks displays. Moreover, the public is reminded to refrain from using, picking, or collecting any kind of firecracker on the streets, and keep a close eye on children. If injured, visit the nearest health facility for immediate treatment.
