DOST-V, through its Provincial Science and Technology Office Camarines Sur, conducted two days of the Technology Training on Charcoal Briquetting in Brgy. Magsaysay, Tinambac, Camarines Sur last November 29-30, 2023.

Through the Innovations for Filipinos Working Distantly (iFWD) Program of DOST V, Ms. Evelyn Javato, iFWD beneficiary, was able to purchase the DOST-FPRDI designed technologies namely; a) Drum Kiln (carbonization), b) Charcoal Crusher, c) Charcoal Binder/Mixer and d) Manual Charcoal Briquettor. This training is also aligned with the Innovation, Science, and Technology for Accelerating Regional Technology-based Development (iSTART) program.

Facilitated by Mr. Pedrito Q. Lontok, Supervising SRS, and Engr. Amando Allan DM. Bondad, Senior SRS of the DOST-Forest Products Research and Development Institute (FPRDI), the event has attracted several farmers from DOST V-assisted LGUs, including Pasacao and Libmanan, and Ms. Evelyn Javato, an iFWD beneficiary.

The training delves into the intricacies of charcoal briquetting, demonstrating the process of transforming agroforest wastes, such as coconut shells, into densified charcoal. The practical session includes a demonstration of the charcoaling process using coconut shells.

Highlighting the advantages of briquettes—ease of ignition, slower burning rate, and more intense heat emission per unit volume compared to ordinary charcoal—the program represents a significant leap in fuel efficiency and sustainability.

Beyond the technological aspects, the training aims to empower farmers with an alternative source of income through the adoption of DOST-developed technologies and programs.
