The Department of Education (DepEd) Region V supports the National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month celebration by hosting activities aligned with the advocacy celebrations to strengthen commitment to inclusion.
This step is in continuation of DepEd’s support to inclusive education, ensuring that learners with special educational needs are welcomed, accepted, and provided with appropriate support.
The month of February was officially declared as National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 157, issued on February 18, 2002.
DepEd Region V, in partnership with the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) encourages every learner and the community to join the nationwide observance of National Down Syndrome Consciousness Month.
Regional Director Gilbert T. Sadsad said that through this initiative, the abilities, voices, and valuable contributions of persons with Down Syndrome are commemorated and recognized which sets as reminder for all of our shared responsibility to create spaces where everyone can learn, grow, and thrive.
Said initiative further recognizes and upholds the rights of children and individuals with Down Syndrome, especially in the schools and communities.
This month-long observance is a reminder that understanding leads to acceptance, and acceptance leads to inclusion, Sadsad added.
“Every learner, regardless of ability, deserves respect, understanding, and equal opportunities to succeed,” he further stated.
