On January 14-15, 2025, 20 women from Baras, Catanduanes, joined a skills training program focused on bangus-based products at the Multi-Purpose Training Center, Capitol Compound, Virac. The training, led by resource speakers from the Regional Fisheries Training and Fisherfolk Coordination Division (RFTFCD), aimed to empower victims of Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
Participants learned practical skills like making bottled bangus in oil, deboning bangus, and fish smoking through lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities. On the second day, a “Fish Nโ Learn” session provided financial management tips to help participants make informed decisions about their livelihoods.
Each participant received a starter kit with processing tools and equipment to support their journey into entrepreneurship. Provincial Agriculturist Ace William R. Tria encouraged participants, saying: “We hope youโll make the most of this opportunity. Letโs not allow the challenges of the past to define our future. This will help you become empowered and start your own business.”
