Blazers bag 2 gold medals

COLLEGE of St. Benilde went 1-2 in the men’s middleweight category of taekwondo’s speed kicking in the 96th National Collegiate Athletic Association on Monday.

Matthew Cloyd Roxas (6.408 points) and JV Anthony Villaron (6.033) boosted the Blazers’ medal haul as they took gold and silver in the virtual competitions.

The Blazers hiked their medal collection to 4-2-1 (gold-silver-bronze) entering Tuesday’s final day of competition shown on GTV channel of GMA-7, the NCAA’s new television partner.

Arellano University’s Terrence Ciriaco placed third with 6.033 points, edging out San Beda’s Gabriel Teruel, who had 5.992.

The Mendiola-based Red Jins remained in second place with two golds, two silvers and four bronzes, while the Chiefs were in third spot with 1-2-2.

Over the weekend, CSB’s Mikko Michael Regala foiled the bid of San Beda’s Alfritz Arevalo for a golden double by topping the welterweight division. 

Regala recorded 6.700 points to beat Arevalo, the men’s poomsae standard event gold medalist who settled for the silver with 6.517 points. Arellano University’s Christian Dave Tayrus copped the bronze with 6.483 points.

San Beda’s Christian Neil Arches ruled the men’s lightweight division.

The 21-year-old Arches tallied 6.700 points to beat Arellano’s Michael Noel Boncales (6.600) and CSB’s Piolo Mari Jazmines (6.392).
