BARANGAY CAPTAIN KILLED IN POLICE OPERATION

A barangay captain in the Arellano District of Surigao City was killed in a police operation yesterday afternoon, February 20, 2020 around 1:00PM infront of a halo-halo snack house, Amat street. The location is also situated at the back of Surigao City Police Station building.

Police identified the suspect as Reneboy Olvis Aquino, 41 years old Punong Baranggay of Balibayon, Surigao City.

According to Police Lt. Col. Christian Rafols II, the Chief of Police in Surigao City that a buybust or entrapment operation was conducted by his intelligence operatives for a certain person dealing with firearms but it resulted in armed encounter and neutralization of the suspect.

The said person was identified only after the operatives neutralized him. Rafols told the media yesterday in a press conference on why it happened just at the back of the City PNP Building: “Hapit na mag-usa ka bulan ta nga ka transaction through text lang nga mopalit tag armas unya naay nakahatag nato ug cellphone number nga kini nga number daw mapalitan nato ug armas. Mao na atong gi transaction sa atong police unya gahi pa adtong una hangtud sa karon nagkasinabot na sila nga magkita sa luyo, wala nato gi-expect no nga si Kapitan ang motunga didto kay wala ta nag expect nga siya ang nakatransaction through text. Mao tong pagtransaction nila paghatag sa kuwarta (1,000 peso bill and 9 pcs. budol-money) sa atong police, pagdawat niya, iyang idunol tong armas unta, nakit-an niya ang atong police didto sa kilid kay siyempre nakapalibot na man ang atong police didto kay buybust man to sa armas, niingon daw nga mga ja** kamo, mga police man diay mo!”

The suspect fired shots towards the police operatives using a caliber .45 pistol but first failed to burst, he quickly cocked and load the same and aimed to the operatives which prompted the police officers to shoot the suspect which caused him to fell to the ground and the responding ERS declared he was dead.

SOCO led by Chief Inspector Haide Sedoro conducted a crime scene processing with the other personnel of Surigao del Norte Provincial Crime Laboratory Office and witnessed by Taft Barangay Captain Pablo A Bonono Jr., Surigao City Kagawad Joseph Joy Yuipco, and media representatives, the items seized from the possession and control of the suspect are as follows;
a) One (1) Colt MKIV Series 80 Caliber .45 pistol with SN: 296475;
b) One (1) ammunition of Caliber .45 from the chamber;
c) One (1) magazine of Caliber .45 containing four (4) ammunitions;
d) One (1) black Samsung A20 Android phone
e) One (1) fired cartridge case of caliber .9mm;
f) One (1) key with key holder;
g) One (1) ammunition of Caliber .45;
h) One (1) black Honda Beat (150108) MV file no. 1501-0230724 registered in the name of Argie B. Ugalde
i) One (1) black sling bag (SENA) containing : one (1) hand grenade (fragmentation) assorted keys and assorted documents;
j) One (1) 1,000 bill (original) QU219614;
k) Nine (9) 1,000 bill (photocopy);
l) One (1) folded wallet containing assorted personal ID’s/cards;
m) Cash amounting P514.00;
n) One (1) black Nokia Analog phone (keypad)

All confiscated items and evidences mentioned-above were under the custody of the SOCO, PCLO subjected for forensic examinations.

“The death and neutralization of the mentioned suspect will contribute to the decrease to the accounting of loose firearms in Surigao City and neighboring municipalities to include the deterrence of shooting incidents most likely,” the report from City PNP said.

While the younger brother of Reneboy Aquino, Michael Aquino reacted negatively to the report and statement from the police. His brother went to Amat street to visit his son in a boarding house before the shooting happened. He just presided the Barangay Session and he was wearing the official barangay uniform during the time he was shot.

Delfina Luca, 60 years old Barangay Utility Worker in Balibayon told the media that she is always the errand of Kapitan Aquino to get keys in his bag, didn’t notice any firearm inside but only papers. He was a good kindhearted public servant and kids even served by him with foods when they will enter his office in Balibayon. “Sakit para sa ako jaon an buotan na Kapitan nasingod jaon, hamok pa ija mga pangandoy para sa karajawan sa mga katawhan.
