BACOLOD CITY — The General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) criticized the government’s statements for the 77th International Human Rights Day, calling them “hollow and deceptive” in light of what it described as persistent corruption and impunity.

GAWA Secretary General Wennie Sancho compared official pronouncements on human rights to “vibrant paint on a tarnished canvas,” arguing that such messages lack credibility when structural corruption remains unaddressed.

Sancho said the government’s rhetoric ignores “the cracks of graft and impunity,” insisting these issues are merely glossed over rather than confronted.

He likened the situation to “painting a beautiful mural of human rights on a wall riddled with corruption,” suggesting authorities hope the public will not see “the rot underneath.”

Sancho also criticized the alleged extravagant lifestyles of some elected officials, which he said are funded by taxpayers who continue to struggle financially.

He cited former Miss Universe Catriona Gray’s comment that “the so-called public servants are living like kings and we are the servants,” noting that the statement reflects widespread public frustration.

GAWA said Filipinos have been conditioned for decades to accept inequality, fear speaking out, and tolerate corruption as a routine part of governance.

Sancho emphasized that Human Rights Day should motivate Filipinos to reclaim their voice and collective agency.

The group highlighted a line meant to encapsulate their message: “There are no tyrants where there are no slaves.”

Sancho said, “We are not slaves. We are citizens with rights, entitled to demand accountability and transparency,” urging Filipinos to reject apathy and “assert our freedom.”

GAWA called on the public to summon the courage to speak out and continue fighting for dignity, justice, and genuine respect for human rights.

“Will we rise to the challenge and forge a better future for all?” Sancho asked. “Shout out for freedom and the dignity of the Filipino people.” (Dolly Yasa via tdg)
