BACOLOD CITY – Dengue cases in Negros Occidental may have been declining, but fatalities rose from 9 to 12, as of October 18, according to reports of the Provincial Health Office (PHO).
PHO data showed a total of 5,033 dengue cases, with 12 deaths recorded from January 1 to October 18 this year, compared to 5,561 cases during the same period, a decrease of 9.49 percent.
Bago City remains among the top 10 local government units in Negros Occidental with the most cases at 1,117, followed by La Carlota City – 460, Kabankalan City – 455, San Carlos City – 260, Isabela – 239 with three deaths, Silay City – 214, Cauayan – 181, Hinigaran – 153, La Castellana – 145, and 134 cases in Himamaylan City.
On the other hand, the highly urbanized Bacolod City logged 912 cases with six deaths, from January to October 11 this year, registering a reduction of 53.6 percent, compared to 1,965 cases with four deaths in the same period last year, according to reports of the City Health Office (CHO).
The age group with the most number of cases from one to 10 years old.
Local health authorities also reported that all the 32 LGUs in Negros Occidental have cases of dengue.
Despite the downward trend, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ma. Girlie Pinongan urged residents to continue being vigilant and maintain cleanliness of surroundings as the rainy season continues.
She attributed the decline in cases to the public awareness campaign on avoiding dengue infection and early detection. (Gilbert Bayoran via tvds)
