The City of Bacolod, in partnership with the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP), joined the rest of the world in celebrating the World Radio Day today [Feb. 13], with a mass, a motorcade, and a fellowship lunch with about 100 senior citizens of Barangay Pahanocoy. The fellowship with senior citizens at the Barangay Pahanocoy gym was graced by Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran, and Councilors Simplicia Distrito, Carlos Jose Lopez, Israel Salanga, and Wilson Gamboa Jr., and City Administrator Em Ang. Rep. Greg Gasataya was represented by his legislative consultant Mark Steven Mayo. Councilors Cindy Rojas and Bartolome Orola were also represented by their respective technical assistants. Across the world, this is now the 9th year of World Radio Day celebration and is being spearheaded by UNESCO. In Bacolod, it is now on its 6th edition, with the city government spearheading the celebration, in partnership with the KBP- Negros Occidental Chapter, which is composed of 19 AM and FM stations. The international theme of the World Radio Day this year is, “Radio and Diversity.” The Bacolod celebration was spearheaded by the Bacolod City government, through the Public Information Office (PIO), in partnership with KBP, headed by chairperson Nona Magbanua, station manager of Aksyon Radyo, and vice chairperson Jeony Bigay, station manager of DYHB- RMN, and the Barangay Pahanocoy Council, headed by Punong Barangay Yolanda Noble. The celebration started with a motorcade from the Bacolod Public Plaza going to Barangay Pahanocoy gym, participated by 19 AM and FM radio stations. Upon arrival, a mass was offered that was officiated by Fr. Januarios Paglinawan. After lunch, the senior citizens enjoyed the party games facilitated by KBP members. On Feb. 29, 2020, the KBP- Negros Occidental Chapter will host an awards night, dubbed, “Tingog Kag Handurawan Awards,” to recognize and honor outstanding radio reporters and drama talents, at the SMX Convention Center. On its website, UNESCO stated that the World Radio Day “marks a time where people around the world celebrate radio and how it shapes our lives. Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change.” In 2018, Mayor Evelio Leonardia issued Executive Order No. 4 constituting the committee for the World Radio Day celebration in Bacolod. The World Radio Day Celebration in Bacolod started in 2015 after the passage of City Ordinance 08-14-792 series of 2014, authored by then councilor Alex Paglumotan.*/CITY PIO
