Bacolod City – Mayor Greg Gasataya has formally requested Education Secretary Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara for assistance to repair the damage sustained by public school classrooms in the city, following the onslaught of Typhoon Tino.

In a media interview, City Administrator Atty. Mark Steven Mayo said that the Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis of Bacolod schools reported major damage to 134 classrooms and minor damage to 189 classrooms.

“Upon verification and discussion with the Bacolod Division DepEd head, the damaged classrooms are not safe and conducive for conducting or holding classes,” Mayo said.

The letter sent to Angara highlights the urgent need for intervention and resources to repair and reconstruct the severely affected school buildings.

The city government is appealing to the Department of Education for help in restoring the learning environment for thousands of Bacolodnon students affected by the calamity.

Angara and Department of Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco visited Negros Occidental recently following the directives of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., to lead the assessment to typhoon-affected communities. (Theresa Mae Dulman via tvds photo by tvds)
