Recognizing Zamboanga City’s growing role in the international maritime industry, the City Council adopts a resolution commending Philsunrise Maritime Inc. (PMI) and its key officials for their significant contribution to local employment and global maritime promotion.

The Resolution No. 365 specifically acknowledged PMI President Capt. Jovito Torres and Chief Engr. Edwin Torres for their leadership in expanding deployment opportunities for Zamboangueño seafarers. The commendation was highlighted during their courtesy visit to Mayor Khymer Olaso in City Hall Monday morning, March 2.

The measure noted that even at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, PMI sustained and increased the representation of local seafarers in its fleet, providing stable livelihoods for families and reinforcing the city’s standing in the international maritime sector.

Adopted during the City Council’s regular session on February 11, 2026, the resolution underscored the company’s continued dedication to community development and employment generation, further solidifying Zamboanga City’s reputation as a vital source of globally competitive maritime professionals.

In a separate resolution, the council also conferred a plaque of appreciation on Japanese shipowner Kentaro Abe of Nissen Kaiun Co., Ltd. for his steadfast support to local seafarers. Abe recently led his first-ever seminar in the city, held at Palacio del Sur from February 26 to 27, 2026. Centered on the theme “Safety Must Always Come First,” the seminar drew 240 participants, including PMI officials and crew members, and emphasized global safety standards and best practices in maritime operations.

Both resolutions were principally authored by Second District Councilor Frederick “Fred” Atilano, highlighting the honorees’ vital role in strengthening the city’s maritime workforce and advancing its global competitiveness.

Also present during the courtesy visit were PMI officials: Manning Supervisor Johnelle Torres, Chief Accountant Mariz Languido, Manning Staff Leah Gatbunton and Accounting Staff Alyssa Guirit. (Arvin Midel) (photo credits:Kathy Wee Sit)
