PRO 5, under the leadership of PBGEN Erosito N Miranda, Acting Regional Director, reiterates its strong stance alongside the PNP in reminding the public that unauthorized use of police uniforms, insignia, or representing oneself as a PNP officer is a serious criminal offense.
Under Article 179 of the Revised Penal Code, the unauthorized wearing of a PNP uniform or insignia is punishable by arresto mayor, which ranges from one month and one day to six months. Similarly, Article 177 penalizes those who usurp official police functions under false pretenses with prision correccional in its minimum or medium period, equivalent to six months and one day to four years and two months imprisonment.
The PNP also reminds business owners and establishments that manufacturing, selling, or distributing police uniforms without proper authorization is prohibited under Executive Order No. 297. Violators, after due notice and hearing, may face business closure, confiscation of unauthorized products, cancellation of licenses or permits, and administrative fines.
āWearing a PNP uniform without authorization is not a joke or a costume. It is a criminal act that undermines public trust and endangers the safety of our communities. Let us all work together to uphold the law and protect the people we serveā, said PBGEN Miranda.
Everyone is encouraged to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activities or individuals misrepresenting themselves as PNP officers. These reports are essential in protecting communities from scams, fraud, and potential harm, ensuring that law enforcement duties are carried out only by authorized personnel.
This effort highlights the PNPās pledge to a āBagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman,ā with service, integrity, and public safety at the forefront of its mission. ###
