To promote holistic development among young athletes, the Schools Division Office (SDO) of Albay brought its Youth Caravan to Paoay Lake National High School on May 27, 2025.
The event, held for student-athletes and coaches of DepEd Region V (Bicol Vulcans), was part of the Learning and Resource Planning Office’s (LRPO) initiative titled “Usapang Wellness 101.”
The session focused on building grit and resilience among athletes, with Schools Division Superintendent of Sorsogon City, William E. Gando, highlighting the value of perseverance. “Anumang mangyari, try and try and try,” Gando said, underscoring the need for determination in sports and life.
Panelists including Atty. Domilyn G. Silero, Guidance Counselor Marites C. Basilla, Prefect of Discipline Ma. Janice Cunanan, and PDO IV Maria Cristina Baroso led an engaging Q&A on mental wellness, self-care, and personal safety. Atty. Silero reminded athletes, “Gawing inspirasyon ang nararamdaman habang naglalaro.”
During their discussions, four practical safety tips were shared:
Know your boundaries; Don’t live in fear—speak up!; Trust your feelings—say no when uncomfortable; and Find a way to exit unsafe situations.
Athletes were also encouraged to approach the LRPO Desk if they need support or someone to talk to.
Christian Cardano from the Tabaco City Division reflected on the event’s impact: “Minsan bully ako, pero dahil sa Youth Caravan, na-realize ko na mali ang mam-bully kasi nasasaktan ang taong na-bully.”
The Youth Caravan continues to ensure that student-athletes are mentally and emotionally prepared both on and off the field.
