BARANGAY Ginebra San Miguel rode a hot start to coast to a 119-93 victory over Blackwater and snap two-game skid in Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup Sunday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The Gin Kings erected a 37-20 lead at the end of first quarter, sustained their intensity for a 62-44 halftime advantage and coasted the rest of the way to improve with a 4-2 win-loss record.
“Coming off the last tough two losses against tough teams, you can bring your best game and still lose to a Magnolia and San Miguel Beer,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone said. “But we knew tonight that we had to kind of jump out of that and make sure that we are beating the teams we are supposed to beat,”
Christian Standhardinger and Jamie Malonzo delivered 27 and 25 points, respectively, to lead Ginebra’s charge, while reinforcement Justin Brownlee was in his usual elements and finished with 25 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks.
Season Most Valuable Player Scottie Thompson, whose school jersey was retired by University of Perpetual Help System DALTA last Friday, added 11 points, seven assists and four rebounds also for the Gin Kings, who lost to Magnolia and San Miguel Beer.
Blackwater, which recalled Shawn Glover to replace import Troy Williams, took its sixth straight defeat and fell to 1-7.
Glover finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Bossing.
