Davao City:   The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP XI) has seen a reduction in fire incidents within the region due to their sustained efforts in campaigning for preventive measures in communities around Region XI.

As of May of 2020, BFP XI has recorded a total of 812 of fire incidents in the Region which compared to data from 2019 has a total recorded 1,433 number of fire incidents. This signifies that the campaign for reducing fires in the region is effective since the number of incidents has slowed down compared to last year.

The Chief of Operations Officer for BFP XI Senior Inspector Israel Johann Alagaban discussed that there has been a huge difference when it comes to the number of fire incidents before the implementation of the nationwide campaign dubbed by the BFP as Oplan Ligtas na Pamayanan in Region XI.

“Our style used for the campaign is we do not wait for people to approach us, the Bureau of Fire [Protection] will go to barangays … to engage in educational campaigns,” Alagaban said.

Alagaban emphasized that despite the success of their campaign, people should be vigilant in ensuring that fire safety and prevention should be maintained especially during the implementation of community quarantine because of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in different areas of the region.

“We call upon people to be vigilant in maintaining fire safety measures in communities especially now that people are in their respective homes and there are a lot of appliances in use so this means there is a high risk of fire incidents,” Alagaban said. (PIA XI/KPLCaro)
