Computer-literate applicants got the edge Davao jobs fair

DAVAO CITY – It pays to be a techie, or at least to know some basics of computer use.

In a job fair in eastern coastal Mati City of Davao Oriental, the Davao Region, interviews had to be done virtually because of the pandemic, hence, only those who know how to dabble on their computers or tinker with their mobile phones could be accommodated,

Besides, employers are prioritizing computer-literate applicants to satisfy the qualifications of the offered positions, and also due to the new normal mode of working, said Pauline Olita, head of Mati City’s Public Employment Services Office.

She said the one-day virtual job fair on April 30 had 400 applicants qualifying for the interview, from out of 28,000 who applied.

Five companies participated in the job fair held a day before Labor Day, one of them, a business process outsourcing company, VXI Global Holdings B.V. and another a computer technology firm Alfalink Total Solution Corp. The three others were cacao and chocolate producer, Mars Agri Ventures and Commodities, Pryce Gases Inc. and Iloilo City-based microfinance organization Taytay sa Kauswagan Inc.

The Philippine Employment Service Officer here said it conducted a pre-registration days before the job fair for the 28,000 who applied and trimmed the number down to 400 for the online interview by the five companies.

Meanwhile, the city government said some 508 Mati residents received their assistance from the Office of Sen. Chistopher Lawrence “Bong” Go through the Department of Social Welfare and Development, The recipients received P15,000 each,

The beneficiaries were picked from the indigent and disadvantaged sectors of fisher families, farrmers tricycle drivers, persons with disabilities and the fire victims,

The assistance was given last week at the Mati Cultural Center by Mati Mayor Michelle Nakpil Rabat and Sen. Go’s representative.
